CHAPTER H8 – CONDITIONS (Modules 37–44)

Module H8–37: Hallucinogen Use Disorder

A substance-related disorder involving repeated use of hallucinogenic drugs (e.g. LSD, psilocybin, PCP) that leads to impairment or distress.

Key symptoms:

  • Strong cravings
  • Loss of control over use
  • Social, school, or work problems

Long-term effects:

  • Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD) (flashbacks)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Possible psychosis in vulnerable individuals

Module H8–38: Haltlose Personality Disorder (Historical)

A now-obsolete psychiatric diagnosis (mainly early 20th century Europe).

Key characteristics:

  • Extreme impulsivity
  • Lack of long-term planning
  • Emotional instability
  • Self-centred or reckless behaviour

Modern understanding:

  • Not in DSM-5
  • Often overlaps with:
    • Antisocial personality traits
    • Borderline personality traits

Module H8–39: Hoarding Disorder

A mental health condition where a person finds it extremely difficult to discard possessions.

Core features:

  • Strong distress when throwing things away
  • Excessive accumulation of items
  • Living spaces become cluttered and unusable

Key distinction:

  • Not the same as collecting (collecting is organised; hoarding is chaotic and distressing)

Impact:

  • Unsafe living conditions
  • Social isolation
  • Anxiety and functional impairment

Module H8–40: Huntington’s Disease

A progressive genetic neurodegenerative condition affecting movement, thinking, and mental health.

Symptoms:

  • Involuntary movements (chorea)
  • Memory and thinking decline
  • Depression and irritability
  • Apathy and OCD-like behaviours

Cognitive effects:

  • Poor planning and decision-making
  • Loss of executive function

Progression:

  • Worsens over time (no cure currently)

Module H8–41: Hyperkinetic Syndrome

An older term (mainly European) used to describe severe ADHD-like symptoms in children.

Features:

  • Extreme hyperactivity
  • Impulsivity
  • Poor attention control

Modern classification:

  • Now generally considered part of ADHD diagnosis

Module H8–42: Hypersomnia

A sleep disorder or symptom involving excessive daytime sleepiness.

Symptoms:

  • Sleeping for long periods
  • Still feeling tired after sleep
  • Difficulty staying awake during the day

Causes:

  • Depression
  • Sleep disorders
  • Neurological conditions

Module H8–43: Hypomania

A mood state linked to Bipolar II disorder.

Symptoms:

  • Increased energy
  • Reduced need for sleep
  • Elevated or irritable mood
  • Increased activity or talkativeness

Important note:

  • Less severe than mania
  • Does not usually cause psychosis or severe impairment

Module H8–44: Histrionic Personality Disorder

A personality disorder involving excessive emotional expression and attention-seeking behaviour.

Characteristics:

  • Strong need to be the centre of attention
  • Dramatic or theatrical behaviour
  • Rapidly shifting emotions
  • Attention-seeking appearance or behaviour

Impact:

  • Relationship difficulties
  • Emotional instability in social situations
