Easy Read Training Text Health Inequalities, Understanding Disability & Mental Health

 

1. Health Inequalities

People with disabilities and mental health conditions often experience poorer health than other people.

This can include:

  • Physical health problems

  • Mental health problems

  • Difficulty accessing services

  • Shorter life expectancy

Some groups also facing health inequalities include:

  • Elderly people

  • Vulnerable adults

  • People with complex needs


Why Does This Happen?

One main reason is lack of education and training.

Many professionals are not fully trained to understand:

  • Learning disabilities

  • Mental health conditions

  • Autism and neurodiversity

  • Aging needs

  • Communication differences

This can lead to:

  • Misunderstanding

  • Poor care

  • Missed diagnoses

  • Inequality in treatment


Progress & Improvements

Things have improved over the years.

There is now more:

  • Awareness

  • Training

  • Advocacy

  • Inclusion

However, there is still a long way to go to achieve full equality in health care and services.

We should never make assumptions.

It is usually lifelong.


Mental Health

Mental health relates to emotional wellbeing.

It affects how we:

  • Think

  • Feel

  • Behave

  • React

  • Cope with stress

  • Interact with others

Mental health can change over time and may improve with support.


4. Purpose of This Training / Research

This training has been created to support:

  • Parents

  • Families

  • Carers

  • Support workers

  • Professionals

  • Educators

The aim is to:

  • Increase understanding

  • Improve care

  • Promote inclusion

  • Reduce stigma

  • Support wellbeing


5. Reasonable Adjustments, Equality & Access

People with disabilities and mental health conditions have the right to:

  • Equality

  • Fair treatment

  • Accessible services
