What is Catatonic Schizophrenia?

 


 It is a physical and Mental condition that affects how we move, talk and behave.
It affects how we communicate and behave around others around us. 
Mental symptoms affect our senses: seeing, hearing and smelling what is not there. 
This is called Hallucination. 

Catatonia causes other Mental conditions such as:
  • Depression, mood disorders like Bipolar disorder, Major depression. 
  • Anxiety, OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

What is Psychosis? 

Psychosis is a mental health condition that makes it hard to understand what is real and what is not.

Symptoms of a psychotic episode

  Delusions (false beliefs) with or without a reason. 

    • Disorganised Thinking: Incoherent speech or difficulty organising thoughts.

Causes

 Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there) and disorganised thinking. 

    • Sensory experiences without external stimuli, such as hearing voices.
    • People might struggle to distinguish what is real from what is not.
    • This could lead to huge distress and impairment in daily functioning.




Psychosis can arise from various factors, including:

  • Mental Health Disorders: Conditions like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
  • Substance Use: Abuse of drugs or alcohol can trigger psychotic episodes.
  • Medical Conditions: Certain illnesses, such as encephalitis or severe stress, can also lead to psychosis.

Treatment

Early intervention is crucial for effective treatment, which may include:

  • Medication: Antipsychotics are commonly prescribed.
  • Therapy: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can help manage symptoms.
  • Support: Family and community support play a vital role in recovery.

Physical symptoms.

  • Motor disturbances
  • Hard to get motivated to move.
  • Poor posturing 
  • Non - stop movements
  • Catatonic excitement
  • Stupor: People may find it hard to respond to others.
