Giving Learners Choice in Visual Learning

Making Flashcards Accessible for Everyone

The Big Idea

Not all learners like the same type of pictures.

Some may prefer:

  • Photographs

  • Drawings

  • Cartoons

  • No pictures at all

Why This Matters

If learners do not like the images:

  • They may feel uncomfortable

  • They may not engage

  • Learning becomes harder

Teacher Responsibility

Teachers should ASK learners:

  • Do you want pictures?

  • What type of pictures do you prefer?

Types of Visuals

Learners can choose:

  • Real photographs (more realistic)

  • Drawings (simple and clear)

  • Cartoons (fun and engaging)

Example: Flashcard

Word: ladybird

Options:

  • Real photo of a ladybird

  • Simple drawing

  • Cartoon version

  • No picture (word only)

Why Choice Works

Giving choice:

  • Builds confidence

  • Reduces anxiety

  • Improves engagement

  • Supports independence

Important Message

Accessibility means:

Letting the learner choose what works for them.

Final Message

Good teaching listens to the learner.
