🅶 Chapter G – Modules 41–43

Gallstones (Cholelithiasis)

  • Hardened deposits in the gallbladder
  • Often no symptoms until blockage occurs
  • Severe pain in upper right abdomen or back (often after fatty meals)

Treatment:

  • Gallbladder removal (laparoscopic cholecystectomy)
  • Medicines to dissolve stones (less common)

Genital Herpes (HSV)

  • Chronic sexually transmitted infection (STI)
  • Causes painful blisters or ulcers (genital or anal area)
  • Caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 or HSV-2)

Treatment:

  • No cure
  • Antiviral medication (e.g., acyclovir, valacyclovir)
  • Reduces outbreaks and transmission

Gout

  • Painful inflammatory arthritis
  • Caused by uric acid crystal buildup in joints (often big toe)

Symptoms:

  • Sudden severe pain
  • Swelling, redness, heat in joint

Treatment:

  • NSAIDs or colchicine (flare-ups)
  • Allopurinol (long-term prevention)

Heart Disease

  • Umbrella term for heart-related conditions
  • Includes coronary artery disease and angina

Symptoms:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath

Hepatitis (A, B, C, etc.)

Types:

  • A → contaminated food/water
  • B & C → blood/body fluids

HIV / AIDS

  • Virus attacks immune system (CD4 cells)
  • Without treatment → AIDS stage

Management:

  • Lifelong antiretroviral therapy (ART)

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

  • Chronic high pressure in arteries

Risks:

  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney damage

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

  • Chronic digestive system disorder
  • Affects large intestine function

Symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhoea or constipation

  • Immune system attacks healthy tissue

Effects:

  • Skin

  • Organs

Lyme Disease

  • Bacterial infection from tick bites

Symptoms:
