๐Ÿงฌ Chapter L11 – Lymphatic System (Module 21)

The lymphatic system is a key part of both the immune system and circulatory system. It helps maintain fluid balance, defend against infection, and remove waste from the body.

It is often described as the body’s drainage and defence system.

๐Ÿง  What the Lymphatic System Is

The lymphatic system is made up of:

  • Lymph vessels
  • Lymph nodes
  • Organs and tissues (e.g. spleen, thymus)
  • Lymph fluid (lymph)

It transports a fluid called lymph, which carries:

  • Waste products
  • Immune cells
  • Nutrients and fats

๐Ÿ’ง What Lymph Is

  • Lymph is a clear, watery fluid
  • It comes from fluid that leaks out of blood vessels into tissues
  • It collects:
    • Waste
    • Bacteria and pathogens
    • Immune cells (lymphocytes)
    • Nutrients

⚙️ How the Lymphatic System Works

Unlike the blood system:

  • There is no central pump (no heart)
  • Lymph moves through:
    • Muscle contractions
    • Breathing movements
    • Physical activity

Flow process:

  1. Fluid leaves blood vessels into tissues
  2. Becomes lymph
  3. Travels through lymph vessels
  4. Passes through lymph nodes (filtered)
  5. Returns to bloodstream near the neck

๐Ÿ›ก️ Key Functions

๐Ÿ’ง Fluid balance

  • Removes excess fluid from tissues
  • Prevents swelling (oedema)

๐Ÿง  Immune defence

  • Produces and transports white blood cells (lymphocytes)
  • Filters bacteria and viruses in lymph nodes

๐Ÿงช Waste removal

  • Removes cellular waste and abnormal cells
  • Helps detect damaged or cancerous cells

๐Ÿ” Nutrient transport

  • Absorbs fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the digestive system
  • Moves them into the bloodstream

⚠️ Lymphatic System Disorders

๐Ÿ’ง Lymphedema

  • Fluid buildup causing swelling (often arms or legs)
  • Can occur if lymph vessels are blocked or removed

๐Ÿฆ  Lymphadenitis

  • Infection of lymph nodes
  • Often causes pain and swelling

๐Ÿงช Swollen lymph nodes

  • Common sign of infection or illness
  • Often found in neck, armpits, or groin

๐ŸŽ—️ Lymphoma

  • Cancer of the lymphatic system
  • Affects lymphocytes (immune cells)

Types:

  • Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma

⚠️ Symptoms of Lymphatic Problems

Possible signs include:

  • Swelling in limbs (lymphedema)
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Persistent fever
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Chronic fatigue

๐Ÿ”ฌ Key Idea

The lymphatic system is:

  • A drainage system for body fluid
  • A major part of immune defence
  • A transport system for fats and immune cells
  • Essential for infection control and fluid balance

๐Ÿง  Study Questions (Answers found in module text)

๐Ÿ” Understanding

  1. What is lymph?
  2. What are the main parts of the lymphatic system?
  3. Why is the lymphatic system important?

⚙️ Function

  1. How does lymph move through the body without a pump?
  2. What role do lymph nodes play?
  3. How does the lymphatic system support immunity?

⚠️ Disorders

  1. What causes lymphedema?
  2. What is lymphoma?
  3. What symptoms suggest lymphatic system problems?

๐Ÿ”— Connections

  1. How does the lymphatic system link to the immune system?
  2. Why is swelling a sign of lymphatic dysfunction?

๐Ÿ“Œ Final Summary

The lymphatic system is a vital drainage and immune network that:

  • Removes excess fluid
  • Fights infection
  • Transports nutrients
  • Filters harmful substances

When it is damaged, it can lead to swelling, infection, or cancer of the immune system.
