🦠 Chapter L11 – Lyme Disease (Module 20)

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused mainly by Borrelia burgdorferi. It is transmitted through the bite of infected black-legged (deer) ticks.

🧫 Cause & Transmission

Lyme disease is spread by:

  • Infected black-legged (deer) ticks
  • Tick bites that usually remain attached for 24–48 hours
  • Exposure in:
    • Wooded areas
    • Grasslands
    • Outdoor vegetation

⚠️ Early tick removal greatly reduces infection risk.

⚠️ Early Symptoms (Stage 1 – Early Localised)

Symptoms usually begin within days to weeks.

🌡️ Common early signs:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Joint pain

🎯 Key sign:

  • Expanding red rash called erythema migrans
    • Often shaped like a “bulls-eye”
    • Appears in around 70–80% of cases

🧠 Stage Progression

Lyme disease develops in stages if untreated:

🧩 Stage 2 – Early Disseminated

The bacteria spreads through the body:

  • Multiple skin rashes
  • Facial paralysis (Bell’s palsy)
  • Heart problems (palpitations, rhythm changes)
  • Dizziness
  • Worsening fatigue

🧩 Stage 3 – Late Disseminated

Occurs months or years later:

  • Severe joint pain (especially knees)
  • Arthritis-like symptoms
  • Long-term neurological issues
  • Cognitive problems (“brain fog”)

⚠️ Complications

If untreated, Lyme disease can lead to:

  • Chronic joint inflammation
  • Long-term neurological damage
  • Cognitive dysfunction
  • Ongoing fatigue and pain

⚠️ Symptoms may become long-lasting or disabling.

🏥 Treatment

  • Most cases are treated successfully with antibiotics
  • Typical treatment lasts 2–4 weeks
  • Early treatment prevents long-term complications

⚠️ Delayed treatment increases risk of chronic illness.

🛡️ Prevention

🧍 Personal protection:

  • Wear long sleeves and trousers in grassy/wooded areas
  • Use insect repellent (e.g. DEET)
  • Avoid brushing against long grass or shrubs

🔍 After outdoor exposure:

  • Check skin thoroughly for ticks
  • Check scalp, behind ears, and underarms

🪳 Tick removal:

  • Use fine-tipped tweezers
  • Remove as soon as possible

🔬 Key Idea

Lyme disease is:

  • A tick-borne bacterial infection
  • Often starts with a bulls-eye rash
  • Can progress from mild flu-like illness to serious neurological and joint disease
  • Highly treatable if caught early

📌 Final Summary

Lyme disease is a tick-borne bacterial infection that often begins with a bulls-eye rash and flu-like symptoms. If untreated, it can progress into serious neurological, heart, and joint complications, but it is usually highly treatable with early antibiotics.
