🛡️ SAFETY, SUPPORT & PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARIES

🌿 CORE PRINCIPLE

👉 Support the person
👉 Understand their situation
👉 BUT always protect safety (yours and theirs)

⚖️ IMPORTANT BALANCE

👉 Understanding behaviour does NOT mean accepting risk

👉 You can:

✔ Be kind
✔ Be non-judgemental
✔ Try to understand

BUT ALSO:

✔ Set boundaries
✔ Keep yourself safe
✔ Involve others when needed

🧠 WHY THIS MATTERS

You said:

“They may not be themselves”

👉 This can happen in conditions like:

  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Bipolar Disorder

👉 When someone is very unwell, they may:

  • Act differently
  • Be more emotional or reactive
  • Struggle to control behaviour

👉 This can affect safety

🚨 WHEN SAFETY MAY BE AT RISK

Look out for:

  • Aggression or anger
  • Loss of control
  • Threatening behaviour
  • Extreme distress
  • Unpredictable actions

🤝 WHAT WORKERS SHOULD DO

1. Stay Calm

  • Keep voice steady
  • Do not react emotionally

2. Keep a Safe Distance

  • Be aware of space
  • Do not corner yourself

3. Set Clear Boundaries

✔ “I want to help, but I need us both to stay safe”

4. Do NOT Handle It Alone

👉 Very important:

✔ Call a manager
✔ Involve another staff member
✔ Follow workplace policy

5. Know When to Step Away

✔ It is okay to leave the situation
✔ Safety comes first

🧠 TEAMWORK IS IMPORTANT

👉 Some situations need more than one person

✔ Manager
✔ Safeguarding lead
✔ Mental health team

👉 This is not failure
👉 This is good practice

⚖️ IMPORTANT MESSAGE

👉 Getting help from others does NOT mean:

❌ You are giving up
❌ You are judging the person

👉 It means:

✔ You are protecting everyone
✔ You are acting responsibly

💬 HOW TO SAY IT (VERY IMPORTANT)

✔ “I’m here to support you”
✔ “I may need to involve someone else to keep us safe”
✔ “This is about safety, not judgement”

❌ WHAT NOT TO DO

❌ Ignore warning signs
❌ Try to manage everything alone
❌ Put yourself at risk
❌ Overpromise confidentiality

🌿 CLIENT VERSION (EASY READ)

💬 SAFETY IS IMPORTANT

👉 You will be treated with respect
👉 You will not be judged

BUT:

👉 Workers must also keep people safe

🤝 WHAT THIS MEANS

Sometimes:

  • More than one person may help
  • A manager may be involved
  • Extra support may be needed

💭 IMPORTANT MESSAGE

👉 This is not punishment
👉 This is to keep everyone safe

🌟 YOU ARE STILL SUPPORTED

✔ You will still be listened to
✔ You will still be respected
✔ You will still get help

🧠 TRAINING MESSAGE FOR YOUR COURSE

👉 “We support the person, but we do not ignore risk”

👉 “Safety and support must work together”

🌟 FINAL PRINCIPLE (VERY STRONG FOR YOUR COURSE)

👉 “Understanding behaviour helps support
👉 But safety protects everyone”
