📘 What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course.
It teaches people how to:
- Notice when someone is struggling
- Understand mental health problems
- Give early help
- Support someone until they get professional help
👉 MHFA is like physical first aid, but for mental health.
🎯 Why is MHFA Important?
Mental health problems are common.
MHFA helps to:
- 💙 Support people in crisis
- 🧠 Improve understanding of mental health
- 🚫 Reduce stigma (negative attitudes)
- 🤝 Encourage people to get help early
👉 MHFA can make a big difference in someone’s life.
👀 What does MHFA teach?
MHFA teaches you to:
- Notice warning signs
- Respond calmly and safely
- Help someone get support
- Support both crisis and non-crisis situations
Examples of warning signs:
- Anxiety or panic
- Depression or low mood
- Confusion or unusual thoughts (psychosis)
- Substance use (alcohol or drugs)
🧩 The 5-Step Action Plan (ALGEE)
MHFA uses a simple plan called ALGEE:
1️⃣ A – Assess for risk
- Is the person in danger?
- Are they thinking about suicide or self-harm?
2️⃣ L – Listen without judgment
- Let the person talk
- Do not interrupt
- Do not judge
👉 Just listen and show you care.
3️⃣ G – Give reassurance and information
- Stay calm
- Tell them they are not alone
- Give simple, helpful information
4️⃣ E – Encourage professional help
- Suggest a doctor, counsellor, or therapist
- Help them find support
5️⃣ E – Encourage self-help and support
- Suggest coping strategies
- Encourage talking to friends or family
- Support healthy habits
👥 Who is MHFA for?
MHFA is for everyone, not just professionals.
It is used by:

- Guide someone to professional help
🚨 In a Crisis
If someone is in danger:

- Call emergency services if needed
👉 Stay with the person if it is safe to do so.
