🧠 Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

📘 What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training program.
It teaches people how to:

  • Notice when someone is struggling
  • Understand mental health and substance use challenges
  • Give initial support
  • Help the person get professional help

👉 It is like physical first aid, but for mental health.

🎯 Purpose of MHFA

MHFA helps people:

  • Spot early warning signs
  • Reduce stigma about mental health
  • Support people in a crisis
  • Guide people to the right support services

🧩 The 5-Step Action Plan (ALGEE)

MHFA uses a simple plan called ALGEE:

1️⃣ Assess for risk of harm

  • Is the person in danger?
  • Are they thinking about suicide or self-harm?

2️⃣ Listen without judgment

  • Let the person talk
  • Do not interrupt or judge
  • Show you are listening

3️⃣ Give reassurance and information

  • Be calm and supportive
  • Explain they are not alone
  • Share helpful information

4️⃣ Encourage professional help

  • Suggest seeing a doctor, therapist, or counsellor
  • Help them find support services

5️⃣ Encourage self-help and support

  • Suggest coping strategies
  • Encourage support from friends, family, or groups

💬 Emotional Support & Befriending

MHFA teaches you to:

  • Be a supportive listener
  • Be kind and non-judgmental
  • Offer reassurance
  • Stay calm and caring

👉 This is similar to befriending:

  • Being a safe person to talk to
  • Offering emotional support
  • Not giving advice like a therapist

⚠️ Important: What MHFA is NOT

MHFA does NOT mean:

  • Diagnosing mental illness
  • Giving therapy or counselling
  • Acting like a professional doctor

👉 MHFA is a bridge to professional help, not a replacement.

🧑‍⚕️ Mentoring & Professional Support

MHFA helps you:

  • Support someone until they get help
  • Guide them to professionals
  • Encourage safe next steps

👉 Examples of professional help:

  • Doctor (GP)
  • Therapist or counsellor
  • School or workplace support
  • Crisis services

📚 Who can take MHFA training?

MHFA training is for:

  • Teachers
  • Support workers
  • Employers and HR staff
  • First responders
  • Parents and carers
  • Anyone who wants to help others

📲 How to Get Help in a Crisis

If someone is in danger:

  • Call or text 988 (USA Suicide & Crisis Lifeline)
  • Call emergency services if needed

🌍 Why MHFA is Important

  • Mental health problems are common
  • Many people do not get help early
  • MHFA helps people feel supported
  • It can save lives 💙
