Why the original writing might not be clear

Common problems include:

• sentences that are too long
formal words (property, assistance, service provision)
too much information in one paragraph
pictures not matching the text clearly
small or crowded text

Easy Read writing rules staff should follow

  1. One idea per sentence

  2. Short sentences (8–12 words)

  3. Simple everyday words

  4. Pictures next to the text

  5. Large clear font

  6. Lots of space on the page

Example sentence fix

Not Easy Read:
“Your allocated care worker will attend the premises.”

Easy Read:
Your support worker will come to your home.

Good practice tip for services

Even organisations that use symbols (like Widgit or similar) sometimes forget that Easy Read is about the words as well as the pictures.

Pictures help — but clear writing is the most important part.
