👋 Introduction
In this module, you will learn
about:
• What Spina Bifida is
• What Cerebral Palsy is
• How they are similar and different
• How they affect daily life
• How to support people
• Mental health and wellbeing
👉 These conditions are often taught together to help understanding.
🧠 What is Spina Bifida?
Spina Bifida is a condition
someone is born with.
It happens when the spine does
not form properly during early pregnancy.
👉 This can affect nerves, movement, and body functions.
🧬 Why does it happen?
• The neural tube forms the
brain and spine
• In Spina Bifida, it does not close properly
• This leaves a gap in the spine
👉 This happens very early in pregnancy.
🧩 Types of Spina Bifida
🟢 Spina Bifida Occulta (Mild)
• Small gap in the spine
• No nerve damage
• Often no symptoms
• Many people don’t know they have it
🟡 Meningocele (Moderate)
• Fluid-filled sac pushes
through spine
• No nerves in the sac
• May cause mild problems
🔴 Myelomeningocele (Severe)
• Spinal cord and nerves in
the sac
• Can cause paralysis
• Bladder and bowel problems
• Often linked to Hydrocephalus
⚠️ Related Conditions
• Hydrocephalus – fluid on the
brain
• Tethered Cord Syndrome – spinal cord stretched or stuck
🧍 How Spina Bifida Affects Life
• Difficulty walking or moving
• May use a wheelchair or aids
• Bladder and bowel challenges
• Possible learning difficulties
👉 Everyone is different.
❤️ Support

• Personal care (for some people)

condition that affects movement and muscle control.
👉 It is caused by damage to the brain before, during, or shortly after
birth.
🧠 Key Facts
• Affects movement and
coordination
• Lifelong condition
• Does NOT get worse over time
• Everyone is affected differently
🧩 Symptoms
• Stiff or floppy muscles
• Difficulty walking
• Speech or communication challenges
• Sometimes seizures or learning difficulties
❤️ Support
• Physiotherapy
• Occupational therapy
