🧠 Bipolar II Disorder (Easy Read)

What is Bipolar II Disorder?

    • A mental health condition where mood changes between:

      1. Hypomania – a period of higher energy and elevated mood.

      2. Major depression – a period of low mood and sadness.


Symptoms

  • Hypomania:

    • Feeling very happy, energetic, or productive

    • Less need for sleep

    • Racing thoughts or fast talking

    • Feeling very confident or “grandiose”

    • Taking risks or acting impulsively

    Major Depression:

    • Feeling sad, hopeless, or empty for a long time

    • Losing interest in activities you normally enjoy

Diagnosis

    • Done by a mental health professional.

    • Criteria include:

      • At least one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode

      • Episodes are not severe enough to be full mania

      • Symptoms are not caused by other medical conditions or substances


Treatment

  • 1. Medications:

    • Mood stabilizers, antidepressants, and antipsychotics may help control mood swings.

    2. Psychotherapy (Talk Therapy):

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

    • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

    • Helps manage symptoms, improve coping skills, and regulate mood.

    3. Lifestyle Changes:

Prognosis
