It is not easy being understood when you have a learning disability, or even making yourself heard. I am writing this blog to show how my disability affects my day-to-day life and what help & support I need. This blog is for those who learn and work in disability and mental health. I have lived with Disabilities and Mental Health problems for nearly 57 years since birth. I want to help others help others the same and similar to me.

Step-by-Step Implementation Guide

1. Define SMART Goals

Ensure every goal answers the core parameters clearly:

Specific: Target a single, well-defined area for improvement.

Measurable: Define explicit indicators (e.g., deliverables, self-assessments, completed tasks).

Achievable: Verify that necessary resources, accommodations, and time are accessible.

Relevant: Confirm direct alignment with the mentee’s personal, professional, or skill priorities.

Time-bound: Establish clear start dates, target milestones, and final review points.

2. Develop Micro-Action Steps

Large objectives can feel overwhelming. Splitting a goal into manageable tasks builds confidence early:

Task Decomposition: Divide each SMART goal into sequential, bite-sized tasks.

Milestone Deadlines: Attach realistic target dates to each discrete step rather than just the final outcome.

Resource Identification: Detail required tools, reading materials, template access, or internal support before starting.

3. Monitor Progress & Maintain Adaptability

Structured Check-Ins: Use regular mentoring sessions to track completed steps against the plan.

Responsive Adjustments: Modify deadlines, strategies, or support structures when unexpected barriers, mental health shifts, or workplace changes occur.

4. Celebrate Achievements & Reflect

Acknowledge Small Wins: Explicitly recognise each completed milestone to build self-efficacy.

Reflective Practice: Discuss which strategies worked, what barriers came up, and how those insights can shape future goals.
