- Sara Revealed, SARA'S DISABILITY AND MENTAL HEALTH BLOG
- It is not easy being understood when you have a learning disability, or even making yourself heard. I am writing this blog to show how my disability affects my day-to-day life and what help & support I need. This blog is for those who learn and work in disability and mental health. I have lived with Disabilities and Mental Health problems for nearly 57 years since birth. I want to help others help others the same and similar to me.

Key Pillars for Supporting Career Pathways
1. Accessible Information and Learning
Easy Read Materials: Use short sentences, clear fonts,
bullet points, and images to make course materials, handbooks, and job
applications easy to understand.
Core Skills Training: Ensure access to functional
learning—such as reading, English, and math—especially for individuals who
missed out during early schooling.
Tailored Learning Aids: Provide assistive technology,
screen readers, visual schedules, and specialised tools suited to individual
needs.
2. Physical Accessibility & Travel
Built Environment: Ensure educational institutions,
workplaces, and public spaces feature ramps, step-free access, wide doorways,
and reliable lifts rather than relying on stairs.
Reliable Public Transport: Support people with
accessible transport routes, step-free buses and trains, clear timetables, and
travel training, recognising that many individuals do not drive.
3. Person-Centered Education & Transition
Personal Goals: Find out what the person genuinely
wants to achieve before choosing a path.
Evaluating Institutions: Check whether colleges or
universities offer strong disability support services, accessible campuses, and
flexible learning options.
Right Support Plans: Set up individual support systems
early including one-on-one assistance, extra time, or quiet study spaces.
4. Employment & Job Searching
Targeted Job Searching: Build skills in resume
writing, interview preparation, and searching for inclusive employers.
Matching Strengths & Opportunities: Balance what a
person enjoys doing with their skills, available accommodations, and
realistic employment opportunities.
Autism and Specific Needs: Focus on environments that
match unique strengths (such as structured tasks, low-sensory spaces, or clear
written instructions) across as many industries as possible.
Ongoing Workplace Support: Ensure job coaching,
workplace modifications, and continuous training remain in place after
employment begins.
