Avoidant Personality Disorder (AVPD) study notes

This is a good summary of Avoidant Personality Disorder (AVPD) and fits into Cluster C, the anxious/fearful cluster.

Avoidant Personality Disorder (AVPD)

AVPD involves a long-term pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and extreme sensitivity to criticism or rejection. A particularly important feature is that the person often wants relationships but avoids them because they are afraid of being rejected, embarrassed, or judged.

FeatureWhat it can look like
Fear of rejectionExpecting others to criticize, dislike, or reject them
Feelings of inadequacySeeing themselves as inferior, unattractive, awkward, or socially incapable
Social avoidanceAvoiding parties, groups, jobs, or activities involving interpersonal contact
Fear of embarrassmentAvoiding new experiences because they might make mistakes or look foolish
Holding backBeing reluctant to become close to someone unless they are reasonably certain they will be accepted
Sensitivity to criticismExperiencing negative feedback as particularly painful
Desire for connectionWanting friendships and intimacy but allowing fear to prevent them

The really important distinction

The simplest way to remember AVPD is:

"I want to be close to people, but I'm afraid they will reject me."

This is different from Schizoid Personality Disorder, where the person generally has much less interest in close relationships and often prefers being alone.

It is also different from Dependent Personality Disorder, where the central issue is an excessive need to be cared for and difficulty functioning independently.

AVPD vs. social anxiety disorder

These two can look very similar and can occur together.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)
→ The main problem is intense anxiety about particular or many social/performance situations.

AVPD
→ The pattern is broader and involves personality-level feelings of inadequacy, rejection sensitivity, and avoidance of interpersonal relationships and situations.

So it isn't simply:

"AVPD = really severe shyness."

It is a pervasive pattern affecting relationships, self-image, social participation, and occupational functioning.

Cluster C comparison

Now you have all three Cluster C disorders:

DisorderCentral fear/pattern
Avoidant PD"People will reject or criticize me because I'm inadequate."
Dependent PD"I can't cope alone; I need someone to take care of me."
OCPD"Things must be done correctly, orderly, and according to my standards."

That makes the differences much easier to remember:

AVPD → rejection
DPD → abandonment/helplessness
OCPD → perfection/control

And importantly, all three can involve anxiety, but the source and expression of that anxiety are different.
