What Is the HPA Axis?

The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis is your body's main long-term stress response system. It is a communication network between three organs:

Together, they help regulate:

How the HPA Axis Works

The hormone pathway follows this sequence:

What Does Cortisol Do?

Cortisol helps your body cope with prolonged stress by:

  • Increasing blood glucose for energy.
  • Helping maintain alertness.
  • Supporting blood pressure.
  • Reducing inflammation.
  • Temporarily suppressing immune activity.
  • Conserving energy for essential functions.

The Negative Feedback Loop

The HPA axis does not stay switched on forever.

When enough cortisol has been released:

  • Both reduce CRH and ACTH production.
  • Cortisol levels gradually return to normal.

This process is called negative feedback, and it helps restore the body's internal balance (homeostasis).

Step 1: You feel nervous.

Step 2: The hypothalamus releases CRH.

Step 3: The pituitary gland releases ACTH.

Step 4: The adrenal glands release cortisol.

Result: You stay alert, focused, and have enough energy to complete the presentation.

Once the presentation ends and the stress passes, the negative feedback loop reduces cortisol production and your body gradually returns to normal.
