Visual Sentence Building

Using Pictures, Words and Real-Life Observation


Big Idea

Learners can look at a picture or real-life scene and build a sentence.

This helps learners:

  • Understand language

  • Describe what they see

  • Build confidence


Step 1: Look at the Picture

Example scene:

  • A person looking at the sea


Step 2: Simple Sentence

I can see the sea.


Step 3: Break It Down

  • I = pronoun

  • can see = verb phrase

  • sea = noun


Step 4: Add Detail

The sea is blue.
The sea is calm.


Step 5: Build Longer Sentence

I can see the sea.
It is blue and calm.


Step 6: Expand Thinking

Ask learners:

  • What else can you see?

  • What is the weather like?

  • How does it feel?


Step 7: Learner Creates Own Sentence

Example:

I can see the sea.
The sky is blue.
The water is moving.
