Looking at Letters After the Vowel

1. The Big Idea

Words have:

  • a vowel

  • letters after the vowel

This helps us read the word.


2. Look at the Words

  • cat

  • bed

  • sit

  • mop

  • cup

  • dog

  • pin


3. Find the Vowel

Ask:

What is the vowel?

Examples:

  • cat → a

  • bed → e

  • sit → i

  • mop → o

  • cup → u


4. Look After the Vowel

Now ask:

What letters come after the vowel?

Examples:

  • cat → a + t

  • bed → e + d

  • sit → i + t

  • mop → o + p

  • cup → u + p

  • dog → o + g

  • pin → i + n


Activity 1

Fill in:

  • cat → a + ____

  • bed → e + ____

  • sit → i + ____

  • mop → o + ____

  • cup → u + ____


5. Learn the Pattern

These are called CVC words:

Consonant – Vowel – Consonant

Examples:

  • cat

  • bed

  • sit


6. Say the Word

Learners should:

  • Say the word

  • Break it into parts

  • Blend it back together


Activity 2

Break the word:

  • dog → d / o / g

  • pin → p / i / n
