Learning, Work, and Later Life

Introduction

Staff need to understand that learning and development do not stop in adulthood.

People continue to learn, work, and grow throughout their lives.

1. Changing Views on Age and Learning

In the past, people often retired earlier and stopped learning new skills.

Today, this is changing.

Most people:

  • Retire later

  • Continue working

  • Or choose to keep learning new skills

This is especially true if people are:

  • Healthy

  • Supported by good healthcare

  • Given the right opportunities

2. Learning Does Not Stop

People with special needs or disabilities:

  • Do not “stop” learning at a certain age

  • May want to continue education or training

  • May want to learn new hobbies or job skills

Learning can continue into:

  • Adulthood

  • Later life

3. Work and Life Skills

Many people want to:

  • Stay in work

  • Return to work

  • Learn new job skills

  • Volunteer

  • Be part of their community

This includes people with special needs.

They may need:

  • Adjustments

  • Support

  • Flexible learning

4. The Role of Health and Support

Good healthcare and support can help people to:

  • Stay active

  • Keep learning

  • Remain independent

  • Continue working if they choose

Support may include:

  • Medical care

  • Mental health support

  • Assistive tools

  • Educational support

5. What This Means for Staff

Staff should:

  • Avoid assumptions about age and ability

  • Encourage lifelong learning

  • Offer opportunities at all stages of life

  • Adapt teaching for adult learners as well as young people

Summary

People are living longer, healthier lives.

This means:

  • Learning can continue for longer

  • Work and education can continue for longer

  • People with special needs should have the same opportunities

Learning is lifelong for everyone.
