🧠 What Supports Dyslexic and Disabled Writers When Creating Accessible Content

 


Writing accessible content, such as Easy Read materials, requires more than just simplifying language. It also involves using the right tools and support systems to make the writing process easier for disabled and neurodivergent writers.

For many dyslexic writers, speech-to-text tools can be extremely helpful. These tools allow ideas to be spoken aloud instead of typed, reducing pressure around spelling and written expression. This can help ideas flow more naturally.

Text-to-speech software is also useful. It reads written text aloud, allowing writers to hear their work and identify sentences that are unclear or too complex. Hearing the text can improve editing and clarity.

Visual planning tools, such as mind maps, can help writers organise ideas before writing begins. This is especially useful for people who think in visual or non-linear ways.

However, writing accessible content is not only about individual tools. It also relies on collaboration. Reviewing content with subject experts and people with lived experience ensures that the final material is accurate, respectful, and easy to understand.

Accessible writing is not about reducing meaning. It is about making meaning clearer and removing barriers that prevent understanding.
