🩺 Chapter A – Module 16: Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)

❤️ What is Atrial Fibrillation?

Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is a common heart rhythm disorder (arrhythmia) where the upper chambers of the heart (atria) beat in a fast, irregular, and uncoordinated way.

Instead of pumping properly, the atria quiver, which reduces blood flow efficiency and increases the risk of complications.

⚡ How AFib Affects the Heart

  • Electrical signals in the heart become chaotic
  • Atria do not contract properly
  • Blood may pool and form clots
  • This increases risk of stroke and heart failure

🧠 Symptoms of AFib

Some people have no symptoms, but common signs include:

  • Fast, fluttering, or pounding heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Chest discomfort or pain
  • Reduced ability to exercise

🧬 Causes of Atrial Fibrillation

AFib is caused by electrical disruption in the heart, often linked to underlying conditions:

❤️ Heart-related causes

  • High blood pressure (most common cause)
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart valve disease
  • Congenital heart defects

🧠 Other medical conditions

  • Thyroid disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Sleep apnea

🌍 Lifestyle factors

  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Excess alcohol use
  • High stress levels

⚠️ Risk Factors

Risk increases with:

  • Age (especially over 65)
  • Family history of AFib
  • Existing heart disease
  • Poor lifestyle habits (diet, inactivity, alcohol use)

⚠️ Complications of AFib

If untreated, AFib can lead to serious health problems:

🧠 Stroke

  • Blood clots can form in the heart
  • Clots may travel to the brain
  • AFib is linked to up to 20% of strokes

❤️ Heart failure

  • Heart becomes less efficient
  • Fluid may build up in lungs

🧠 Cognitive effects

  • Increased risk of memory problems or dementia

💊 Treatment and Management

AFib is long-term but manageable.

💊 Medications

  • Blood thinners (prevent stroke)
  • Beta-blockers (control heart rate)
  • Rhythm-control medications

⚡ Procedures

  • Cardioversion (electric reset of heart rhythm)
  • Catheter ablation (corrects abnormal signals)

🧘 Lifestyle changes

  • Healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Weight management
  • Reducing alcohol and smoking

🧩 Key Understanding

AFib is:

  • A common heart rhythm disorder
  • Often linked to other heart and lifestyle conditions
  • A major stroke risk factor
  • Manageable with treatment and lifestyle changes

🧠 Summary

✔ Irregular heart rhythm disorder
✔ Affects atria (upper heart chambers)
✔ Increases risk of stroke and heart failure
✔ Linked to age, lifestyle, and heart disease
✔ Treatable with medication and procedures
