🦠 Chapter L11 – Legionnaires’ Disease (Module 15)

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. It can become serious or life-threatening if not treated quickly.

🧫 Cause & Transmission

Legionnaires’ disease is caused by Legionella bacteria, which grow in warm water systems.

🌑️ Common sources:

  • Hot tubs
  • Cooling towers
  • Showers and taps
  • Decorative fountains
  • Large building water systems

πŸ’§ How it spreads:

  • Inhalation of contaminated water droplets (mist or vapour)
  • Rarely, aspiration (water entering lungs while drinking or choking)

⚠️ It is not usually spread from person to person

⚠️ Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear 2 to 14 days after exposure (sometimes longer).

Early symptoms:

  • High fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

Respiratory symptoms:

  • Cough (dry or mucus-producing)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain

Other possible symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Confusion or mental changes

πŸ‘€ Risk Factors

Most people exposed do not become ill, but risk increases with:

  • Age 50+
  • Smoking (current or past)
  • Chronic lung disease (e.g. COPD, emphysema)
  • Weakened immune system
  • Long-term conditions (e.g. cancer, diabetes, kidney failure)

πŸ₯ Treatment

Legionnaires’ disease requires urgent medical treatment.

πŸ’Š Treatment includes:

  • Antibiotics:
    • Azithromycin
    • Fluoroquinolones
  • Hospital care if breathing is affected
  • Oxygen or respiratory support in severe cases

⚠️ Early treatment greatly improves survival.

⚠️ Complications

If untreated or delayed, it can become life-threatening:

  • Respiratory failure
  • Septic shock (dangerous infection response)
  • Acute kidney failure
  • Death

πŸ›‘️ Prevention

Prevention focuses on water system safety:

  • Regular cleaning and maintenance of water systems
  • Monitoring cooling towers and hot water systems
  • Preventing stagnant warm water build-up
  • Building safety management in large facilities

πŸ”¬ Key Idea

Legionnaires’ disease is:

  • A waterborne bacterial infection
  • Acquired by breathing in contaminated droplets
  • Not usually spread between people
  • Most dangerous in older or medically vulnerable individuals

🧠 Study Questions (Answers found in module text)

πŸ” Understanding

  1. What bacteria causes Legionnaires’ disease?
  2. How is it usually transmitted?
  3. What is the main difference between Legionnaires’ disease and person-to-person infections?

⚠️ Symptoms & Risks

  1. What are the early symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease?
  2. Which groups are most at risk?
  3. Why can confusion occur in severe cases?

πŸ₯ Treatment & Outcomes

  1. What treatments are used for Legionnaires’ disease?
  2. Why is early treatment important?
  3. What complications can occur if it is not treated?

πŸ›‘️ Prevention

  1. Why is water system maintenance important?

πŸ“Œ Final Summary

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious lung infection caused by bacteria in warm water systems. It spreads through inhalation of contaminated droplets and can become life-threatening, but early antibiotics and prevention of water contamination are highly effective.
