📘 Chapter F6 – Module 30: FASD & Fibromyalgia

This module covers two long-term health conditions that affect the brain and body in different ways:

  • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) – neurodevelopmental conditions caused before birth
  • Fibromyalgia – a chronic pain and fatigue condition affecting the nervous system

Both conditions are lifelong, complex, and often require multi-disciplinary support.

🧠 PART 1: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD)

What is FASD?

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is an umbrella term for a range of lifelong conditions caused by alcohol exposure during pregnancy.

👉 It is preventable but not reversible, and affects brain development and physical growth.

🧬 Types of FASD

🔴 Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)

  • Most severe form
  • Distinct facial features
  • Growth delays
  • Brain and nervous system damage

🟠 Partial FAS (pFAS)

  • Some physical and cognitive features of FAS
  • Less severe but still significant impact

🟡 Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND)

  • Learning disabilities
  • Behavioural difficulties
  • Attention and memory problems
  • No obvious physical features

🟢 Alcohol-Related Birth Defects (ARBD)

  • Heart, kidney, bone, or hearing problems
  • Physical developmental effects

🧠 Key Symptoms of FASD

🧠 Brain and Learning

  • Difficulty with learning and memory
  • Poor attention and focus
  • Impulse control issues
  • Hyperactivity

🧍 Physical Features

  • Small head size
  • Shorter height
  • Facial differences (in some cases)

💬 Behavioural Impact

  • Difficulty with social interaction
  • Emotional regulation challenges
  • Problems with daily routines

⚠️ Key Fact

  • FASD is permanent
  • It is 100% preventable by avoiding alcohol in pregnancy
  • Early diagnosis improves support outcomes

🧠 PART 2: Fibromyalgia

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that affects how the brain and nervous system process pain signals.

🧠 Key Symptoms

🩹 Widespread Pain

  • Ongoing pain across the body
  • Lasts at least 3 months
  • Can shift in location

😴 Fatigue

  • Extreme tiredness
  • Feeling unrefreshed after sleep
  • Low energy levels

🧠 Cognitive Difficulties (“Fibro Fog”)

  • Memory problems
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Slower thinking

⚡ Sensitivity

  • Heightened pain response
  • Light touch may feel painful (allodynia)
  • Sensitivity to temperature or pressure

🧬 Causes and Triggers

The exact cause is unknown, but may involve:

  • Nervous system sensitivity
  • Brain pain signal processing changes
  • Stress or trauma triggers
  • Genetic factors

💊 Treatment & Management

There is no cure, but symptoms can be managed:

🧑‍⚕️ Medical support

  • Pain management medication
  • Sleep improvement treatments

🏃 Lifestyle support

  • Gentle exercise (walking, swimming)
  • Regular routines
  • Stress reduction

🧠 Therapy

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Pain coping strategies
  • Emotional support

🔗 CONNECTION BETWEEN FASD & FIBROMYALGIA

Although very different, research suggests:

  • Early brain development disruption (FASD) may increase later vulnerability to chronic pain conditions
  • Both conditions involve nervous system processing differences
  • Both require long-term, multi-disciplinary care

♿ Awareness & Inclusion Message

  • Both conditions are invisible disabilities
  • Symptoms are often misunderstood or underestimated
  • Individuals may appear “fine” while experiencing significant challenges
  • Support and understanding are essential

📄 Easy Read Version

FASD means:

  • A condition caused when alcohol affects a baby before birth
  • It affects learning, behaviour, and development

Fibromyalgia means:

  • A condition that causes long-term pain and tiredness
  • It affects how the body feels pain

Both conditions:

  • Last a long time
  • Need medical support
  • Are not always visible

🧠 Reflection / Activity

Think about:

  • Why are some conditions invisible but still very serious?
  • How can early support change life outcomes?
  • Why is understanding brain-based conditions important?

💬 Final Thought

FASD and fibromyalgia show that:

  • Health conditions can begin before birth or develop later in life
  • The nervous system plays a key role in both pain and development
  • Awareness and support improve quality of life
