😟 Chapter A1 – Module 7: Anxiety

Anxiety is a normal human response to stress or danger. It helps protect us by preparing the body to react.

However, anxiety becomes a disorder when:

  • It is constant or overwhelming
  • It interferes with daily life
  • It causes distress, avoidance, or physical symptoms

🧠 What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is linked to the body’s fight-or-flight response, which prepares us to deal with danger.

When this system is overactive, the brain may:

  • See threats where there are none
  • Stay in “alert mode” too long
  • Make it hard to relax or feel safe

🧠 Causes of Anxiety

Anxiety usually develops from a combination of factors:

🧬 Biological

  • Genetics (family history)
  • Brain chemistry (neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine)

🌍 Environmental

  • Trauma or stressful life events
  • Childhood experiences
  • Ongoing stress (work, finances, relationships)

🧠 Psychological

  • Negative thinking patterns
  • Difficulty coping with uncertainty
  • Low confidence or self-esteem

🧠 Types of Anxiety Disorders

📌 Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

  • Ongoing, excessive worry about everyday life

👥 Social Anxiety Disorder

  • Fear of embarrassment, judgement, or rejection

⚡ Panic Disorder

  • Sudden, intense panic attacks

🎯 Phobias

  • Strong fear of specific objects or situations (e.g. heights, spiders)

👨‍👩‍👧 Separation Anxiety

  • Fear of being away from loved ones

⚠️ Common Symptoms of Anxiety

🫀 Physical Symptoms

  • Fast heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stomach problems (nausea, IBS-like symptoms)

🧠 Mental & Emotional Symptoms

  • Constant worry
  • Feeling restless or “on edge”
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling something bad is going to happen

🧠 How Anxiety Affects the Brain

A key brain area involved is the amygdala:

  • Detects danger
  • Triggers fear responses
  • Can become overactive in anxiety disorders

This leads to:

  • Increased threat detection
  • Reduced tolerance of uncertainty
  • Ongoing worry cycles

🧍 How Anxiety Affects the Body

Long-term anxiety can cause:

  • Muscle tension (neck, shoulders)
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep problems
  • Digestive issues

The body stays in a constant stress state, even when no real danger is present.

⚖️ When Anxiety Becomes a Problem

Anxiety may need support when:

  • It is frequent or constant
  • It affects school, work, or relationships
  • It leads to avoidance behaviours
  • It causes physical health problems

🧠 Treatment and Management

Anxiety is highly treatable.

🗣️ Therapy

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Exposure therapy (gradual facing of fears)

🧘 Lifestyle Support

  • Regular exercise
  • Relaxation techniques (breathing, mindfulness)
  • Healthy sleep and diet

💊 Medication

  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-anxiety medications (when needed)

🤝 Everyday Coping Strategies

  • Break tasks into smaller steps
  • Practice slow breathing
  • Challenge negative thoughts
  • Stay connected with others
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol

⚠️ Important Note on Support

  • In the U.S., you can call or text 988 for immediate mental health support
  • In the UK, support is available via 111
