✍️ 3. PUBLISHABLE ARTICLE (for libraries / publishers / websites)

📖 Why Writers, Publishers, and Libraries Need to Understand the Reading Access Gap

It is often assumed that reading experiences are shared equally across society. However, this is not the case for many disabled and neurodivergent readers.

People with dyslexia or other reading differences may not have had access to the same books or reading experiences during childhood as others their age.

This is not a question of ability, but of accessibility.

Many well-known books and school reading materials were not always accessible in terms of layout, language complexity, or format. In earlier education systems, reading differences were also less likely to be identified, meaning support was often missing.

This has created a gap in reading experience rather than a gap in intelligence or creativity.

While it is always possible to return to these books later in life, the shared childhood reading experience is something that some individuals were excluded from.

This is important for writers, publishers, printers, libraries, and educators to understand.

Accessible writing and publishing can reduce this gap by ensuring that more readers are included from the beginning.

Accessibility is about the present. It is also about recognising past exclusion and improving future access.
