Abuse

Abuse is when one person harms another person physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically.

Types of abuse:

  • Physical abuse (hitting, slapping, pushing)
  • Emotional/psychological abuse (name-calling, manipulation, intimidation)
  • Neglect (not providing food, care, clothing, or safety)
  • Verbal abuse (shouting, insults, threats, humiliation)

Key points:

  • Can happen anywhere (home, school, work, public places)
  • Often hidden from others
  • Can be by someone known or a stranger
  • Never the victim’s fault

Addiction / Substance Use Disorder

A chronic condition where a person cannot control substance use despite harm.

  • Cravings and dependence
  • Loss of control
  • Withdrawal symptoms

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)

A neurodevelopmental condition affecting attention, impulsivity, and activity levels.

Core features:

  • Inattention (difficulty focusing, forgetfulness)
  • Hyperactivity (restlessness, constant movement)
  • Impulsivity (acting without thinking)

Key point:
ADHD is lifelong for many people—it does not disappear in adulthood.

Treatment:

Advocacy

Supporting people to speak up, understand their rights, and access services.


Agoraphobia

Fear of places or situations where escape might be difficult.


Anger

Anxiety Disorders

Persistent worry, fear, or panic that affects daily life.

Symptoms:

Autism

A neurodevelopmental condition affecting communication, sensory processing, and behaviour patterns.
