📘 Standard Version (for your book)

What is Autism?

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition. It is not a mental health illness, but it can affect mental health.

Autism influences how a person reacts to people, situations, and the environment around them. It is called a “spectrum” because it affects people in different ways and to different degrees.

In the past, some people were diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, but this term is no longer used in modern diagnosis. It has been replaced under the broader Autism Spectrum Disorder classification.

The term Asperger’s is no longer used in diagnosis due to historical associations with its namesake, Hans Asperger.

Causes of Autism

The exact cause of Autism is not fully known. However, research suggests it may be linked to:

  • Genetics (family history)
  • Brain development before birth
  • During birth complications (such as lack of oxygen in rare cases)
  • Early brain development differences

👉 Important:

  • Autism is not caused by vaccines
  • Autism is not caused by parenting or upbringing
  • Autism is not caused by anything someone did
