Problems

  • Sentences are too long

  • Uses formal language

  • Too much information in one sentence

  • Not written step-by-step

  • Hard for people with learning disabilities or dyslexia


✅ Good Example (Easy Read)

Make a Dentist Appointment

🦷 I need to see the dentist.

☎ I phone the dentist.

📅 The dentist gives me a day.

⏰ The dentist gives me a time.

😊 I go to the dentist on that day.


Even Better (Support and Accessibility)

☎ You can phone the dentist.

📅 The dentist will give you a day and time.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 You can bring a support person.

💬 Tell the dentist if you need extra help.


Staff Learning Points

When writing Easy Read:

✔ Use short sentences
✔ Use simple words
✔ Write one idea per line
✔ Put the picture next to the words
✔ Leave space on the page
✔ Avoid professional or technical language


Key Message for Staff

Pictures alone are not enough.
Easy Read must also use clear, simple writing.
