📘 NEW SECTION – Understanding When Challenging Behaviour May Occur

Version 1: Standard Learning Module

Understanding When Behaviour May Happen

Many students, trainees, and young people often say:

“Why didn’t anyone tell me this could happen?”

This is why education is important.

People should be taught that challenging behaviour can sometimes happen in certain conditions or situations.

Important Message

This does not mean behaviour should be accepted if it is unsafe.

It means:

  • We understand why it may happen
  • We prepare for it
  • We respond safely and appropriately

Conditions Where Behaviour May Be More Likely

Challenging behaviour may be more common in people with:

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Trauma-related difficulties
  • Communication difficulties
  • Learning disabilities (in some cases, especially with unmet needs)

Situations That May Trigger Behaviour

Behaviour is more likely when a person:

  • Feels overwhelmed
  • Experiences sudden change
  • Cannot communicate needs
  • Feels anxious, scared, or frustrated
  • Is in a sensory-overloading environment

Why This Knowledge Matters

Teaching this helps people to:

It also reduces:
