📘 EASY READ TRAINING MODULE Understanding Learning Disability and Mental Health

 



🎯 MODULE AIMS

This module will help you:

  • Understand what a learning disability is

  • Understand mental health and mental illness

  • Know the difference between them

  • Learn how they can affect each other

  • Learn how to support people safely and respectfully


🧠 1. WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH?

Mental health is how we:

  • Think

  • Feel

  • Behave

  • React to life

Everyone has mental health.

💡 Mental health can be:

  • Positive (feeling well)

  • Negative (feeling low, stressed, anxious)

👉 It can change day to day.


⚠️ 2. WHAT IS MENTAL ILLNESS?

Mental illness is when someone has a diagnosed condition that affects their:

  • Thinking

  • Feelings

  • Behaviour

Examples include:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

💡 Mental illness is:

  • Not a choice

  • Not weakness

  • Something that needs support


🔍 3. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MENTAL HEALTH AND MENTAL ILLNESS

👉 You can have poor mental health without a mental illness.

👉 You can have a mental illness but still have good days.


🧩 4. WHAT IS A LEARNING DISABILITY?

A learning disability means a person:

  • Finds it harder to learn new things

  • May need help with daily tasks

  • May need support to understand information

💡 A learning disability is:

  • Lifelong

  • Different for each person

It can affect:

  • Understanding

  • Communication

  • Memory


⚠️ 5. LEARNING DISABILITY IS NOT THE SAME AS:

  • Dyslexia

  • Dyscalculia

  • ADHD

👉 These are learning difficulties, not disabilities.


🔗 6. HOW LEARNING DISABILITY AND MENTAL HEALTH ARE LINKED

People with learning disabilities:

  • May be more at risk of mental health problems

  • May find it harder to explain how they feel

  • May need extra support to cope

💡 They may experience:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Stress

👉 This does NOT mean something is wrong with them.


💬 7. HOW TO SUPPORT SOMEONE

✔ Listen carefully
✔ Take them seriously
✔ Be patient
✔ Do not judge
✔ Speak clearly and simply
✔ Offer support and reassurance

🚫 Do NOT:

  • Ignore them

  • Judge them

  • Assume they are attention seeking


🛑 8. SAFETY AND RESPONSIBILITY

If someone is at risk:

  • Take it seriously

  • Do not ignore it

  • Report concerns to a manager or professional

💡 Safety is everyone’s responsibility.


🧘 9. WHAT IS CBT (COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY)?

CBT helps people:

  • Notice negative thoughts

  • Change them into positive thoughts

Example:
❌ "I will fail"
✔ "I can try my best"

💡 CBT helps some people but not everyone.


💚 10. SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH

Ways to support someone:

  • Talk and listen

  • Encourage hobbies

  • Encourage routine

  • Support positive thinking

  • Help them access services


🌍 11. SUPPORT IN THE UK AND USA

UK

  • Social care services

  • Community support

  • Charities like Mencap

USA

  • State services

  • Insurance-based support

  • Community programs

💡 Support depends on where a person lives.


🧠 12. KEY MESSAGE

  • Mental health is important

  • Learning disability is lifelong

  • People need support, not judgement

  • Everyone deserves respect
