Chapter 4 Easy Read in Everyday Life

Easy Read is not just for books. It can be used in many parts of life.

Using Easy Read makes information clear, understandable, and fair.

Libraries and Bookstores

Libraries and bookstores are important places for reading.

Easy Read books allow people to enjoy stories and classics like:

Oliver Twist

Alice in Wonderland

Treasure Island

Robin Hood

Easy Read can also be used in graphic novels and comic-style layouts.

Libraries like Ridgefield Library offer some graphic novels, but many books are still not in Easy Read.

Bookstores and publishers can create Easy Read versions alongside traditional books, giving readers more choice.

Education and Qualifications

Easy Read helps students and learners by making learning materials accessible:

Textbooks can be simplified for clarity.

Instructions for courses or exams can use Easy Read formatting.

Colleges and schools can offer Easy Read guides for students with learning disabilities or dyslexia.

From my experience:

Early computer textbooks like WordPerfect were very hard to follow.

Easy Read versions could have made learning much easier.

Accessible materials help students gain confidence, pass exams, and continue learning.

Healthcare and Appointments

Healthcare information can be confusing for many people.

Easy Read can help explain:

Booking an appointment

Checking in at the desk

Waiting in the waiting room

Seeing the doctor or dentist

Taking medicine or following instructions

At Mencap, we created Easy Read guides for patients. This helped reduce anxiety and improve understanding.

Other examples include:

Longer appointment times for people who need them

Using plain English for letters and forms

Pictures to explain medical steps

Work and Daily Life

Easy Read can help people in everyday life:

Applying for jobs

Understanding benefits or money guides

Following rules and safety instructions

Taking part in social or community activities

For example:

Community centres like Sphere offer activities such as art, bingo, and making jewelry.

Easy Read guides for instructions or rules make participation easier and more enjoyable.

Volunteers can help support accessibility by using Easy Read materials.

Websites and Digital Content

Easy Read is not only on paper. It can also be used online:

Websites can use simple language, short sentences, and clear images.

Digital forms and PDFs can be designed for accessibility.

Even passwords and online instructions can be made simpler for people who struggle with text.

Easy Read online helps people access information, services, and learning materials without frustration.

Empowering People

The goal of Easy Read is to empower people:

To make their own choices

To feel confident

To understand information

To participate fully in life

Accessible information is not just a convenience — it is a right.

Easy Read gives people control and independence, whether at home, school, work, or in the community.
