Chapter 2 Who Benefits from Easy Read?

Easy Read was first created to help people with learning disabilities.

However, over time people realized that many different groups benefit from Easy Read.

Clear information helps people understand things better and feel more confident.

Easy Read can support many people in everyday life.

People with Learning Disabilities

People with learning disabilities may find it harder to:

  • Read long text
  • Understand complicated words
  • Process a lot of information at once

Easy Read breaks information into small, clear steps.

This helps people understand things like:

  • Healthcare
  • Education
  • Housing
  • Money
  • Work opportunities

Organisations such as Mencap have created many Easy Read resources to help people understand their rights and services.

People with Dyslexia

People with dyslexia may struggle with:

  • Reading long paragraphs
  • Small print
  • Complex spelling
  • Long or unusual words

For many people with dyslexia, reading can be tiring and frustrating.

Large text, clear fonts, and shorter sentences make reading much easier.

From my own experience, many books were difficult to read because of small print and complicated writing.

Sometimes I would look at a book and know straight away that I would struggle to read it.

For many years I thought I was alone in feeling this way.

Later I realised many other people had similar experiences.

Easy Read could help many people finish books and enjoy reading more.

People with Autism and ADHD

Some people with Autism or ADHD may struggle with:

  • Too much information at once
  • Busy pages with lots of text
  • Difficult language

Easy Read helps by:

  • Breaking information into smaller sections
  • Using clear layouts
  • Supporting text with pictures

This can make information easier to process and less overwhelming.

People with Mental Health Difficulties

When people feel anxious, depressed, or stressed, reading complicated information can feel even harder.

For example, someone may need to understand:

  • Medical information
  • Benefits information
  • Job applications
  • Housing forms

Easy Read can make these situations less stressful.

Clear information can help people feel more in control.

Older People

Some older people may find reading harder because of:

  • Eyesight problems
  • Memory difficulties
  • Fatigue

Large print and clear layouts make reading more comfortable.

Easy Read can help older people understand:

  • Healthcare information
  • Medication instructions
  • Community services

People Learning English

People who are learning English may struggle with:

  • Idioms
  • Slang
  • Complex grammar

Easy Read uses simple and clear language, which can make learning and understanding easier.

Students and Learners

Students can also benefit from clearer information.

Sometimes textbooks use very technical or complicated language.

From my own experience, some textbooks felt like reading another language.

For example, early computer course books, such as guides for WordPerfect, were very difficult to understand.

Clearer explanations could help students learn more easily.

Everyone Can Benefit

Easy Read is not only for people with disabilities.

Many people prefer information that is:

  • Clear
  • Simple
  • Well organised

Even people who read well often appreciate information that is easy to understand.

Easy Read helps remove barriers and makes information more accessible to everyone.

A World with More Accessible Reading

Imagine if more books, websites, and services offered Easy Read versions.

More people could:

  • Enjoy reading stories
  • Finish books
  • Understand important information
  • Feel more confident

Accessible information helps create a fairer and more inclusive society.
