LEVEL 1 MODULE Understanding Emotions & Non-Verbal Communication

🟦

(For Students, Trainees & Staff)

🟢 1. What Are Emotions?

🖼 Picture idea: Different facial expressions.

Emotions are feelings.

Everyone has emotions.

Emotions can change quickly.

Emotions affect behaviour.

Emotions affect communication.

🟢 2. We Communicate Without Words

🖼 Picture idea: Person standing with arms crossed.

Communication is not just talking.

We use our face.

We use our hands.

We use our body.

We use our tone of voice.

🟢 3. Facial Expressions

🖼 Picture idea: Close-up of eyes and mouth changes.

A smile can mean happiness.

A frown can mean worry.

Raised eyebrows can mean surprise.

Avoid assuming — always check kindly.

Trainer Tip:
Ask learners to mirror expressions and identify them.

🟢 4. Body Language

🖼 Picture idea: Different body postures.

Crossed arms may mean discomfort.

Looking down may mean sadness.

Stepping back may mean feeling unsafe.

Fidgeting may mean anxiety.

Teach:

Observe before reacting.

🟢 5. Gestures

🖼 Picture idea: Open hands.

Open hands show safety.

Pointing can feel aggressive.

Calm gestures reduce tension.

Slow movements help anxious learners.

🟦 LEVEL 1 MODULE

Hosting Large Inclusive Groups

(Advocacy Events, Conferences, Forums)

🟣 1. Why Large Groups Need Structure

🖼 Picture idea: Large circle of people.

Large groups can feel overwhelming.

Some people speak loudly.

Some people stay silent.

Some people process information slowly.

Structure makes it fair.

🟣 2. What Is Group Advocacy?

Group advocacy means people speak up together.

It helps people share experiences.

It builds confidence.

It influences change.

This is what you experienced at regional advocacy forums.

🟣 3. Communication Card System

🖼 Picture idea: Coloured cards in hand.

Suggested system:

🟢 Green – I want to speak.
🟡 Yellow – I have a question.
🔵 Blue – I need more time.
🔴 Red – Please slow down.
🟣 Purple – I need a break.

🟣 4. How to Introduce Cards at an Event

Facilitator script:

“Everyone deserves time to speak.”

“Raise your green card if you would like to talk.”

“Raise your blue card if you need more time.”

“No one will be rushed or talked over.”

Practice before discussion begins.

🟣 5. Event Ground Rules

• One person speaks at a time.
• The facilitator watches for cards.
• No interrupting.
• No laughing at others.
• Breaks are allowed.

Write rules on a visible poster.

🟣 6. Roles in Large Advocacy Groups

Teach staff and trainees these roles:

✔ Facilitator – Guides discussion
✔ Timekeeper – Keeps session moving
✔ Emotional Support Person – Checks on overwhelmed participants
✔ Note Taker – Records key points
✔ Safeguarding Lead – Handles serious concerns

This distributes responsibility.

🟣 7. Managing Overwhelm

🖼 Picture idea: Quiet space corner.

Have:
• Quiet area
• Water available
• Break cards
• Clear schedule
• Visual timetable

Predictability reduces anxiety.
