Lost Lives Due to Benefit Cuts πŸ’”

People were told:

  • “Work if you can.”

  • But then also:

  • “Don’t earn too much.”

  • “Don’t work too many hours.”

That 16-hour limit trapped people.
If you worked more:

  • benefits were cut or stopped,

  • rent and food became unaffordable,

  • health often collapsed again.

So people were punished for trying.

For many disabled people and people with mental health conditions:

  • 16 hours was already exhausting

  • it was the maximum they could safely manage

  • but it was never enough to live on

That’s not support — that’s a poverty trap.

And the stress of constantly worrying:

  • “Have I worked too much this week?”

  • “Will they stop my money?”

  • “What if my health dips?”

…that alone is enough to worsen anxiety, depression, epilepsy, and burnout.

Some vulnerable people were unable to afford to live because their benefits were cut.

Key Points:

Tragic Loss of Life ⚠️

  • 10,600 deaths in one year were linked to benefit cuts (March 2015)

  • Some people died because they could not cope with financial stress

Stress of Appeals

  • Waiting for benefit appeals takes a long time

  • Uncertainty causes stress and anxiety

Financial Hardship πŸ’Έ

  • Risk of homelessness, hunger, and debt

  • Winning an appeal may not cover debts already owed

Forced into Unmanageable Situations 🏚️

  • People with disabilities were pressured into work without enough support

  • This can harm health, safety, and wellbeing

Exacerbation of Mental Health Issues 🧠

  • Stress from benefit cuts can worsen anxiety, depression, and epilepsy

  • Some people tragically considered or attempted suicide
