ANNIE’S BOOK INTERDUCTION ACT 1 BY SARA JANE GORMAN

Panel 1 – Door Close-Up

Close-up of the classroom door sign.

Sign: Disability and Mental Health Class


Panel 2 – Jaiden Outside the Door

Jaiden stands outside, rubbing his eyes, looking tired.

Narration: Jaiden Jones was half asleep after oversleeping.


Panel 3 – Inside the Classroom

Ben sits at a desk.

Jaiden: Hi, I’m Jaiden. Is this the disability class?


Panel 4 – Ben’s Reply

Ben smiles and points toward the door.

 

Jaiden introduced himself to Ben.

Jaiden:
“Hi, I’m Jaiden. Is this the disability class?”

Ben smiled and introduced himself.

Ben:
“Yeah, mate. It is. It even says it on the door.”

Jaiden and Ben laughed awkwardly.

Oh no… I’m half asleep. I overslept. Am I late?”

Ben:
“No, mate. You’re just on time. It’s okay.”

Ben: Yeah, mate. It is. It even says it on the door.


Panel 5 – Laughing Moment

Jaiden: Oh no… I’m half asleep. I overslept. Am I late?

Ben: No, mate. You’re just on time. It’s okay.

Both laughs.


Panel 6 – Annie Enters

Annie entered the classroom and introduced herself and her job role as the lecturer. Ben asked Annie if she had a learning disability. Annie told Jaiden and Ben about her conditions.

Ben said it sounded like a lot. Annie replied that out of every difficulty there is an ability. Ben asked what her ability was. Annie said she was an artist, writer, lecturer, and mentor. Ben told her that it was great.

 

Scene 3:  Panel 7 Alex Arrives Late

Alex Drew entered the classroom. 

Alex: Sorry I’m late. I was enrolling, I couldn't find the room either."

Alex Confused

Alex lost his map.

Alex: “Which room is this?”

Annie - " Is the Learning Disability and, Mental Health class."
Ben - " It says on the door, mate".
Alex - " Sorry, oh yer it does, I forgot to read it".
Everyone laughs. 
Annie - " It's your first day, Alex."


Panel 9 – Thinking Bubble

Close-up of Annie.

Annie (thinking): He could have enrolled weeks ago.

How could Alex miss the course sign on the Board? Not knowing but she entered that Jaiden mislaid the sign. 


Panel 10 – Later Truth

Alex enters late.

Alex: Sorry I’m late. I was enrolling.


Panel 11 – Thinking Bubble

Annie (thinking): He could have enrolled weeks ago.

Annie stayed calm. She did not want an argument in the class.

In Annie’s thinking bubble, she thought that Alex could have enrolled a few weeks before the course started.

Annie did not find out until much later that Alex was lying. He had been listening outside the classroom door to Annie and the students chatting for the last half an hour to an hour.

As time went on, Annie and Miss Brown, a former Special Needs teacher who now worked as a trainer and support, noticed that Alex had no interest in learning disability or mental health. When they put him on placements, managers reported that Alex did not show up once.

Alex was always saying that he wanted to be a physiotherapist, but his actions did not match his words.

Annie did not find out until much later that Alex was lying. He had been listening outside the classroom door to Annie and the students chatting for the last half an hour to an hour.

Scene 4  

Slide 2 – Amy Arrives Late

Amy rushes in, holding a small toy.

Amy: “Sorry… babysitter was late.”

Annie: “It’s okay, Amy. Thank you for coming.”
