Understanding Mental Illness and the Law
(Picture: scales of justice + brain)

Slide 1 – Important Message

Having a mental illness does not mean someone will break the law.

Most people with mental illness are not violent.

They are more likely to be victims than offenders.

Slide 2 – Schizophrenia

  • Sometimes people hear voices or see things (hallucinations).

  • Sometimes they have false beliefs (delusions).

  • If not treated, this can cause confusion and risky behavior.

  • Most people with schizophrenia are peaceful.

  • Some people may use drugs or alcohol to cope.

  • Rarely, may hurt self or others when hopeless.

  • With support, recovery is possible.

Slide 7 – Substance Use Disorders

  • Alcohol and drugs increase risk of violence more than mental illness alone.

  • Can make symptoms of other illnesses worse.

  • Treatment and support can reduce risks.
