Easy Read: Understanding Autism, ADHD, and Mental Health

🧠 What are Autism and ADHD?

Autism and ADHD are brain conditions.
They are not bad or wrong.
They just mean people think, feel, and act in different ways.

👶 Are They Disabilities?

  • Autism is a developmental disability.
This means it starts when you are very young and affects how you grow and learn.
  • ADHD is not a learning disability, but it can make learning harder.

📘 ADHD and Learning

People with ADHD may:

  • Find it hard to focus or sit still
  • Get distracted easily
  • Struggle to finish tasks or plan their day

👉 This can make school or work difficult.
👉 ADHD can happen with learning disabilities like dyslexia (reading problems).

🧒 Autism and Development

People with autism may:

  • Find social situations hard
  • Like routines and sameness
  • Get upset by loud noises or bright lights
  • Have trouble understanding feelings

👉 Autism affects how someone develops and connects with others.
👉 It is not a mental illness.

😟 Anxiety and Depression

People with Autism or ADHD can also feel:

  • Very worried (this is called anxiety)
  • Very sad or low (this is called depression)

These are mental health problems.
They are common in people with ADHD and autism.

🔄 Why Do These Happen Together?

  • The brain works differently
  • People might get bullied or feel left out
  • It can be hard to understand feelings
  • Life might feel confusing or stressful

🤔 What Is Alexithymia?

Some autistic people have alexithymia.
This means they find it hard to:

  • Know what they are feeling
  • Say how they feel

This can make anxiety or depression worse.
